Greeting from the President

Gachon University College of Medicine was established in 1998. Compared to Gachon University Gil Hospital, which has a history of 60 years, the Medical School has a short history. In the early days after the establishment of the Medical School, I asked the Medical School, together with the Hospital to focus mainly on education. Over time, as education settled down, I decided to focus on research, the most important mission of universities.

As a concrete plan for research promotion, I decided to establish a research institute for cancer & diabetes. I chose the two diseases since they are giving the greatest pain to humankind now and in the future and two are enough as research subjects for our capacity. I prepared since 2006 and finally opened on May 9, 2008 after 2 years of effort. I named it Lee Gil Ya Cancer & Diabetes Institute (LCDI), which is a symbol of a strong will and desire to foster research at Gachon University School of Medicine and Gil Hospital.

LCDI has been trying to realize its will and desire for research with the following ways.

First, attracting world-class scholars
Second, building state-of-the-art equipments and facilities
Third, selecting and focusing only two diseases, cancer and diabetes, the largest enemiesy of human health
Fourth, securing state-of-the-art research skills and capacity that can lead to the top level in the world

Since its establishment, this institute has been making a big progress through steady efforts, greatly contributing to the advancement and promotion of research level of itself but also College of Medicine and Gil Hospital. Its achievements played a key role in the competition among the 40 university hospitals nationwide targeting a “Research Centered Hospital”, by winning “3rd place” out of 10 hospitals” selected as a “Research Centered Hospital”. “Research Centered Hospital” is a a big 9 year government-support project for medical research and scientist training of the university hospitals. This outcome is the result of the achievements it has made and its future research capabilities that result from the assessment of its achievements.

2018 marks the 60th anniversary of Gachon University Gil Hospital, the 20th anniversary of the medical school, and the 10th anniversary of Lee Gil Ya Cancer & Diabetes. With this in mind, we pledge once again our original goal: "the creative research, development of the world's best technology, conquest of cancer and diabetes that is the hope of humanity, and being a world leader of medical science!"
