The Transgenic Core provides a technical resource to support the generation of transgenic mice and knock-out mice. Transgenic mice possessing specific genes of interest are generated by microinjection of DNA into the pronuclei of fertilized eggs. Knockout mice lacking specific genes are created by homologous recombination in embryonic stem (ES) cells followed by injection into blastocysts. Humans and mice share close to 99% of the genes, and thus mice have been used as a model system in biomedicine for several decades. Compared with other mammals they are easy to breed and house, and have relatively short generation. Most importantly, the mouse genome has been completely sequenced and annotated to a high quality, which allow us to precise modification of the genome using well-established transgenic techniques.

The Core Staff offers expertise, materials, consultation, equipments, and performs selected procedures to generate transgenic mouse and knockout mice. Successful and timely generation of transgenic and knock-out mice requires a concerted and collaborative effort of the Investigator and the Core staff in all stages of the experiment. Investigators planning on utilizing Core services are therefore encouraged to contact the staff already early in the planning stages of the experiment.

Technical support is provided for researchers in all phases of their transgenic research projects. The core activities include transgenic mouse production by DNA microinjection into fertilized oocytes and the production of knockout mice by ES cell injection into
